1. A unit of measure of food energy (symbol: kcal) equal to 1000 calories (4184 joules). North American food packages omit "kilo", referred to it simply as a "Calorie" (symbol: upper-case C).
  2. In chemistry, the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius at a pressure of one atmosphere, equivalent to 4.184 kilojoules. Largely superseded by the kilojoule.
